The kandura (also called dishdasha) is most commonly worn in the UAE.
It is usually white, collarless, and features a tassel (tarboosh) at the neckline. Kanduras are often lightweight, made from cotton or poly-cotton blends to suit the hot Gulf climate.

Thawb: A Broader Regional Term

The thawb (also spelled thobe or tobe) is worn across the Middle East and North Africa.
In countries like Saudi Arabia, Palestine, Sudan, and Syria, the thawb varies in style, length, and fit depending on local customs.

Common Characteristics of the Thawb:

May include a shirt-style collar
Often tailored with buttons or cufflinks
Can come in various colors (grey, beige, cream)
Worn with a regional headscarf (e.g., keffiyeh or shemagh)

Thawbs are more likely to be tailored or decorated with additional embroidery or seams.

However, if you’re in the UAE, the kandura is considered the cultural standard. In other regions like the Levant or Sudan, the thawb takes the lead.
